5 college basketball coaches on early hot seat as 2024 season approaches ft. Arizona State's Bobby Hurley
The 2024-25 college basketball season is set to begin on Nov. 4. While no moves are imminent as every program enters the season with high hopes, several coaches will begin the year on the hot seat.
Here's a closer look at five coaches who will likely need to have a strong season to retain their job.
5 college basketball coaches on early hot seat as 2024 season approaches
#1. Bobby Hurley
Bobby Hurley is entering his 10th season leading the Arizona State Sun Devils. They have gone 155-131 during his tenure, reaching the NCAA Tournament just three out of nine seasons. The Sun Devils have failed to win a single game in March Madness, as they were eliminated in the first round each time. They already have five losing seasons under Hurley, including last year. Another year of finishing .500 could lead to a coaching change.
#2. Kyle Neptune
Kyle Neptune is now in his third season leading the Villanova Wildcats after taking over for Jay Wright. They have struggled during his tenure as they are just 35-33 and have failed to reach the NCAA Tournament. Another season without a March Madness appearance could spell trouble for Neptune.
#3. Dennis Gates
Dennis Gates has led the Missouri Tigers to a 33-34 record over his two seasons at the helm. The first season went great as they were 25-10 and reached the NCAA Tournament, winning their first postseason game since 2010. They took a major step back last year, finishing 8-24 and an abysmal 0-18 in SEC play. If they don't take a major step forward, Gates could be looking for a new job.
#4. Mike Young
Mike Young has spent the past five seasons leading the Virginia Tech Hokies to a 92-66 record. While they have reached the postseason in two of those years, they have failed to win a single March Madness game. They have also failed to reach the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons. Taking another step back could lead to a change atop the Hokies coaching staff.
#5. Porter Moser
Porter Moser is entering his fourth season leading the Oklahoma Sooners. While they have a 54-45 record over that span, he has yet to lead them to an NCAA Tournament appearance. If the Sooners are unable to reach the postseason yet again, there will be plenty of calls for a change.
