“Absolute psychopath”, “Biggest crybaby of all time”: Fans rip apart Dan Hurley as UConn HC gets technical for shouting at the referee
Dan Hurley caused a stir among college basketball fans with his antics during UConn's upset 97-99 loss to Memphis in their opening game of the Maui Invitational Tournament. The Huskies head coach lost his composure on several occasions during the game, culminating in a technical foul towards the end of overtime.
With 40 seconds remaining in overtime and the scores tied, the referees called a foul on UConn's top recruit, Liam McNeeley, for taking the ball out of Memphis guard P.J. Carter's hands before attempting a shot off the board. The referee's call infuriated Hurley, who had to be restrained by associate head coach Kimani Young while aggressively protesting the decision.
Many fans expressed their disappointment with Hurley's behavior following the reigning national champions' first loss of the season. Some fans even questioned the impact of his actions on the team's performance.
"Dan Hurley is an absolute psychopath," said one fan.
"I’m so sick of watching Dan Hurley lose his mind after every single whistle and every single play," added another.
Another fan added, "May be a hot take. But Dan Hurley is such a prick, don’t like that guy."
Although other fans acknowledged his contributions to UConn's success, they were critical of his behavior.
"Holy sh*t Dan Hurley is the biggest crybaby of all time," said one fan.
"Dan Hurley has won two consecutive national titles and acts like a 6-year-old every single game. It's just so tiring to watch. Great coach, terrible guy," said another.
Another fan added, "Dan Hurley is so unlikeable."
Technical foul on Dan Hurley hurts UConn
The Tigers pushed the Huskies all the way, with Solo Ball taking the game to overtime by making a three-pointer with just one second to go in the second half.
The consequences of Hurley's technical foul ended up hurting his team, as Memphis capitalized on the additional free throws awarded, with P.J. Carter sinking all four attempts. This extended their lead to 96-92 with only 40 seconds remaining in overtime, significantly impacting the outcome of the game.
Although the Huskies made every effort to make a comeback during overtime, it wasn't enough as the Tigers held on for a famous victory. The Huskies, who now have a 4-1 record, will look to bounce back tomorrow, when they face the loser of the game between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Michigan State Spartans at 5:00PM ET.
