ACC-SEC Challenge 2024: John Calipari's Arkansas to face Miami Hurricanes in December

John Calipari moving to the Arkansas Razorbacks after a decorated tenure at Kentucky, which included an NCAA Championship, was the talk of the college basketball offseason.

With added attention, Calipari has brought a host of changes to his new team, both in terms of personnel and interest. That value continues to multiply with the release of the ACC-SEC Challenge for 2024.

This year's event will feature a marquee matchup not seen in nearly a quarter of a century as John Calipari and his boys take on the Miami Hurricanes. Their previous encounter? A 75-71 victory for Miami in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.

This year, the ACC-SEC Challenge will feature a chance for the Razorbacks to get their due, as they walk into enemy territory at Miami's Watsco Center on Dec. 3.

With Miami dropping heavily in the standings last season, finishing second-last after a Final Four appearance in 2023, the team saw its stock drop further in the offseason with the loss of Wooga Poplar and Norchad Omier to the transfer portal.

On the other hand, Calipari has done a remarkable job of taking what was essentially a blank slate in Arkansas and rebuilding it over the course of one offseason.

From high school prospects, the team found some quality recruitment in the form of Boogie Fland, Karter Knox and Billy Richmond. Fland was seen as the best PG in the nation by On3, while the latter two are four-star recruits in their own right.

But, it wasn't just the high school market that the 15-year head coach at Kentucky scoured for resources. Instead, his attention shifted to the transfer portal, where his name power gave the team an additional boost.

Former Kentucky Wildcats like Zvonimir Ivisic, Adou Thiero, and D.J. Wagner Jr. all committed to Arkansas in his footsteps. Further star guard Johnell Davis, alongside Tennessee's Jonas Aidoo, followed suit, giving the team much more flexibility with its options.

In his introductory press conference, Calipari talked about the changes necessary to succeed in the current collegiate basketball landscape. He spoke about changing the "formula", an idea he has put to full effect with his offseason moves (via ESPN):

"The lesson was you can't do this now with seven freshmen," Calipari said. "You just can't. You're going to hit a team that's 25 years old on average, one was 26, and that team is physically going to get you, and so now we have a couple transfers that are older, some kids that transferred from Kentucky that went through it, and they're a year older, and some freshmen."
