Duke basketball congratulates 2024 NBA champ Jayson Tatum on landing a $314 million contract extension
After leading the Boston Celtics to their first NBA championship in sixteen years, Jayson Tatum made another headline by signing the biggest contract in NBA history. Tatum agreed to a five-year extension valued at up to $314 million.
His alma mater, Duke, also congratulated Tatum by sharing a tweet from the Boston Celtics featuring graphics celebrating his contract extension. The Duke Men’s Basketball account (@DukeMBB) tweeted money emojis, expressing excitement for their former player's new deal.
Tatum played one season of college basketball with the Blue Devils in 2016-17. He averaged 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 29 games, guiding Duke to the ACC tournament title.
On Saturday, the Celtics announced that Jayson Tatum, a five-time NBA All-Star has signed a contract extension worth $314 million. This deal surpasses the $304 million extension given to his teammate Jaylen Brown.
"Jayson is a special person and player, and it's been a thrill for all of us to watch his entire journey in Boston," Celtics' president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said. "He has embraced all that comes with being a great Celtic and shows consistent and genuine care for every one of his teammates, coaches, and staff across the organization."
This deal will begin with the 2025-26 season and keep Tatum in Boston through the 2029-30 season.

The Blue Devils celebrated Tatum's first NBA championship victory just like any other fan, posting tweet after tweet to honor his success.

Tatum had an impressive postseason, leading the Celtics in scoring, rebounding, and assists. He put up huge numbers in the playoffs, averaging 25.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. Similarly, during the NBA Finals, he recorded 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.2 assists.
