Elliot Cadeau calls RJ Davis “best guard in the country” after latest UNC scrimmage

Elliot Cadeau and RJ Davis stood out as two of UNC’s best players at the intrasquad Blue-White Scrimmage at Dean E. Smith Center on Saturday. The sophomore contributed significantly to the Blue Team's 42 points, helping the team achieve an overall shooting percentage of 55.3%.

Individually, Cadeau made 5 of his 9 attempts, finishing with 12 points and four assists (game-high). When asked about Tar Heels' go-to point guard, RJ Davis, the sophomore had high praise for the senior.

"Its always like a blessing to be able to play against, what I think, is the best point guard in the country," Cadeau shared with Tar Heel Illustrated. "It just makes me better every day so, any chance I get to be able to guard him, I just think it pushes me and makes me better. So, I just try my hardest." (0:50)

During the scrimmage on Saturday, fans only briefly saw RJ Davis’ offensive prowess. The reigning ACC Player of the Year drove to the basket early in the game and fell hard while attempting a contested shot, landing on his left hip and suffering a lower back contusion.

Although Davis returned to the court, he was limited to the bench for the remainder of the game.

2024 freshmen ready to grip RJ Davis’ role at UNC

RJ Davis is amongst the top-rated players in the 2024 college basketball landscape. He was voted top-4 on the list of best players in Division I, based on votes by more than 100 college coaches. However, this season will be his last with the Tar Heels.

The Blue-White Scrimmage showcased promising candidates to fill his role next season. Drake Powell and Ian Jackson formed one of the most dynamic duos on Saturday.

One standout moment was Powell’s impressive two-handed block as Ven-Allen Lubin attempted to slam a lob from Elliot Cadeau. Meanwhile, Jackson showcased his skills by stealing the ball from Cadeau and racing down the open court for a two-handed slam.

Together, Powell and Jackson combined for 18 points. Powell scored 8 points, making four of his eight attempts, while Jackson had an off-shooting night (4-14) and scored 10 points and three assists.
