“FIRE”: Lucy Olsen, Kylie Feuerbach and more react to energetic snaps of Hawkeye’s win vs Iowa State
Lucy Olsen and the Iowa Hawkeyes have had massive success in the first 10 games in their post-Caitlin Clark era. Led by first-year head coach Jan Jensen, the Hawkeyes opened the season with an 8-0 run behind four neutral site games before its first loss to Tennessee Lady Volunteers.
However, the program bounced back in the next game, defeating the Iowa State Cyclones 75-69. It was Iowa's first-ranked team of the season, making the Hawkeyes' ability to win even more monumental. With that, team photographer Tony Nguyen posted a series of energetic snaps from the contest on Instagram, highlighting the Hakwyes' fighting spirit.
While fans stormed the comments section to reflect their excitement around the program's success, Kylie Feuerbach, Lucy Olsen and more Iowa named joined:
"Omg these are sick," Taylor Stremlow wrote.
"Love theseeee," Lucy Olsen commented.
"FIREEE," Kylie Feuerbach wrote.
Caitlin Clark also followed other Hawkeyes in sharing her thoughts:
"These r insane.," Caitlin Clark commented.
"These photos bring me sm joy," another Hawkeyes photographer, Bri Lewerke, commented.
Despite Lucy Olsen's leadership, Sydney Affolter stole the show against Iowa State
Even though Lucy Olsen’s game is perhaps not the same as Caitlin Clark's, the Villanova Wildcats transfer has shown the same leadership qualities. She currently leads the Hawkeyes in scoring with 19.0 points and 5.2 assists per game.
However, in the matchup against Iowa State, Sydney Affolter was the star of the show. She scored a season-high 16 points, six rebounds and two blocks while shooting 54.5% from the field and 50% from the 3-point line.
"...Tonight, Syd just really took it into her own hands there for a while and said 'OK I've got to make some plays,'" Jensen said postgame via HawkCentral. "So I think it's going to be huge for her. She really ignited us."
Affolter has played over 30 minutes in other games this season. However, a change in her shot attempts sparked the performance from the senior guard. She attempted a season-high 11 shots against the Cyclones, overtaking her previous high of six attempts against Washington State on Nov. 24.
Affolter and Co. are on the road to take on the Michigan State Spartans next at Breslin Center on Saturday.
