JuJu Watkins and USC beat Paige Bueckers and UConn in thriller
JuJu Watkins and the Trojans pulled off an incredible win over the UConn Huskies on Saturday night. In a thrilling top-10 matchup and an Elite Eight rematch from last season, the showdown delivered on all fronts.
The No. 7 Trojans secured a dramatic 72-70 road victory over the No. 4 Huskies, despite squandering an 18-point lead in the second half. The game came down to a tense final possession when UConn’s Sarah Strong was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left and her team trailing 72-69.
Strong sank the first free throw but missed the second, forcing her to intentionally miss the third and hope for a rebound. UConn's Paige Bueckers grabbed the rebound, but Strong’s desperate attempt at a game-winning 3-pointer from near halfcourt missed the mark.
It was a wild ending to an even wilder game, but Watkins and USC emerged victorious. The Trojans improved to 11-1 on the season, while the Huskies fell to 10-2.
Both teams will take a break over Christmas before returning to the court on Dec. 29, with UConn hosting Providence and USC traveling to face Michigan.
