Miami guard Haley Cavinder put up 12 points, three rebounds and three assists in the Hurricanes' 74-71 win over Jacksonville on Monday at Watsco Center.
A week after a productive campaign opener in a 78-53 win over Stetson, Cavinder had a drop in efficiency, sinking 5-of-12 shots and blanking in all four 3-point attempts. Cavinder made 3-of-4 free throws to aid Miami overcome the Dolphins in front of the 1,907 Miami crowd.
The Gilbert, Arizona native assisted Natalija Marshall in making the first rainbow shot of the game. She also made a steal and scored the last bucket of the first quarter off an assist from her twin Hanna. Cavinder had less involvement on the offensive end in the second frame, making only a sole lay-up in the 8:46 mark.
Cavinder was involved early in the third quarter, making 2-of-3 field goals within the first two minutes. In the fourth quarter, she managed to get her points by scoring twice in three attempts in the charity stripe. A comeback attempt by the Dolphins was held off by the Hurricanes, thanks to a crucial lay-up by Jasmyne Roberts and two free throws from Darrione Rogers with seven seconds remaining.

Marshall was the player of the game, delivering an all-around effort with efficient field goal shooting. The 6-foot-5 big outscored everyone on the floor with 24 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, including down 3-of-4 3-pointers and 13-of-14 free throws. She also tallied six rebounds, one assist, two steals and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Hanna Cavinder steadied the game with her all-around contribution, playing a team-high 37 minutes and finishing with seven points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Rogers provided the much-needed bench production, channeling 13 of the 25 bench points, including 3-of-8 makes from 3-point territory. She also sealed the game by sinking two free throws with seven seconds remaining.
Miami was slightly more efficient in the offensive end, making 22-of-54 field goal attempts. They made up for their misses by making 24-of-28 free throw attempts. Despite a 10-rebound advantage by the Dolphins, the Hurricanes had the advantage on assists (16 to nine) and steals (10 to seven).
The Hurricanes are on the road next against the Florida Gators on Nov. 16 at O'Connell Center. This will be followed by six straight home games, beginning with a clash against the FIU Panthers on Nov. 19.
