"He just kept screaming it at me": Kim Mulkey shares her son's excitement after watching her cameo in Lil Wayne & Flau'jae Johnson's track
LSU coach Kim Mulkey had a cameo in Flau'jae Johnson's music video "Came Out A Beast," released in August. It also featured other Lady Tigers and rap icon Lil Wayne. The track was from Johnson's debut rap album, Best of Both Worlds, which dropped in June 2024.
The music video opens with Mulkey coaching her LSU team — speaking to her players at halftime of the 2023 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight game.
At SEC Media Day this week, the four-time national champion coach revealed that her son Kramer Robertson, a former St. Louis Cardinals infielder, was much more excited to see her in the video than Mulkey herself.
"People forget that I have two children," Mulkey said. "They’re now grown, but when Lil Wayne and Flau'jae did their thing, my son thought it was the coolest thing ever.
"And he goes, Mom, you really, really don’t understand how big a deal it is. 'Lil Wayne, mom, Lil Wayne!' And he just kept screaming it at me."
When the music video came out two months ago, Kim Mulkey was surprised to see herself in it.
"Never imagined I would be mentioned or even seen in a rap video with Flau'jae and certainly not Lil Wayne," Mulkey said.
"I know my own children went crazy when they heard Lil Wayne say my name in the video," she added.
Kim Mulkey speaks on LSU's culture and embracing the pressure
Kim Mulkey, a three-time AP coach of the year, is known for her passion and intensity. She demands excellence from her players and strives to build a winning culture.
Mulkey made it clear to recruits what they can expect at LSU during her conversation with Paul Finebaum at SEC media day 2024.
"I say this all the time, if you don't want the spotlight on you, and you don't want to be a part of a big brand and branding, then LSU is not the place for you," Mulkey said.
"Because not only women's basketball but in other sports as well, you can't run from it, you can't hide from it. We're the flagship university in the state. I've never seen anything like it. It's just different at LSU," she added.
Kim Mulkey joined the Lady Tigers in 2021 after coaching Baylor for two decades, winning three national titles.
In her second season at LSU, with talented players like Angel Reese, Flau'jae Johnson and Alexis Morris, Mulkey led the Tigers to their first women's basketball NCAA trophy.
