"He'll get drafted in the second round": Analyst drops honest take on UConn's Cam Spencer's position in 2024 NBA draft
Cam Spencer had a strong fifth year of his collegiate career, helping the UConn Huskies win a national title in his lone season with the program. Although he entered college as an unranked prospect in the 2019 recruiting class, his production in the last campaign has landed him on draft boards.
ESPN draft analyst Jeremy Woo expects Spencer to be selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA draft. Speaking to NJ Advance Media on a conference call, he said:
"With Cam, I do expect he’ll get drafted in the second round. I think teams love his toughness, his shooting ability, just doing it on a big stage on a winning team can go a long way. I think ideally for him he lands on a team where it’s a competitive team that needs a guy that can step in and give them some minutes and shoot. That’s what his role will hopefully be."
Spencer averaged 14.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.3 blocks in 33.0 minutes per game last season while shooting 48.4% from the field, 44.0% from three-point range and 91.1% from the free-throw line in 40 games played.
Bobby Marks shares why Cam Spencer will be drafted
While there will be players with higher ceilings than Cam Spencer, ESPN analyst Bobby Marks believes this won't prevent Spencer from being drafted. Marks said:
"Really, the second round is about finding what team fits for you the best. You have the choice of do you want a three- or four-year guy that can help you and maybe come off the bench next year or are you in a position where you’re taking a freshman that maybe fell through the cracks and has got more of an upside but maybe you’ll have to wait two years. That’s kind of like the two different directions you go there." [h/t NJ.com]
Cam Spencer's production will likely ensure that he is selected. Teams are consistently looking for floor spacers, and his ability to shoot at a high clip should lead to him hearing his name called in the second round, which is set for Thursday, June 27.
