“I didn’t see”: Hubert Davis dispels notion of “selfishness” among North Carolina players post 90-76 win over Elon

North Carolina has started its season with a 90-76 home victory over Elon at Dean Smith Center on Monday. However, Tar Heels coach Hubert Davis had to address a notion involving the chemistry of his players.

RJ Davis led the Tar Heels with 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists on 7 of 19 shooting from the field and 3 of 11 from beyond the arc. Elliot Cadeau recorded 17 points, eight assists and four rebounds, while Seth Trimble scored 15 points on 6 of 12 shooting.

However, the win wasn't perfect for North Carolina. Despite winning by double-digits, the team allowed Elon to rally in the second half before the Tar Heels responded to pull away with the victory.

After the game, Davis addressed a reporter's question regarding selfishness within the team, which the denied.

“No, this is not a selfish team," Davis said. "There’s not one bit of selfishness on this team. I’ve never seen that since this team has come together. I didn’t see that tonight. That’s never come into my mind in regards to this team.”

North Carolina's time under Hubert Davis, expectations this season

The Tar Heels have been successful since Davis accepted the job in 2021, boasting a 78-31 record (43-17 ACC) after three seasons. The program reached the championship game of the NCAA tournament in his first year, falling 72-69 to the Kansas Jayhawks despite having a 16-point lead in the first half.

After declining a postseason invite to the National Invitational Tournament in 2023, North Carolina returned to the NCAA tournament the following year but lost 89-87 to Alabama in the Sweet Sixteen.

With his fourth season underway, Hubert Davis will seek to continue the Tar Heels' standard of being national contenders. They will be on the road to face No. 1-ranked Kansas on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
