“I slammed them weights down”: NY Liberty’s Jonquel Jones almost missed out on meeting Alicia Keys; shares hilarious story on Flau’jae Johnson’s pod

As Flau’jae Johnson asked Jonquel Jones about her favorite celebrity who showed up to her games, the two began talking about Game 2 of the 2024 WNBA conference finals. New York’s own Alicia Keys gripped the Barclays Center on Oct. 1.

As the New York Liberty walked away with a close 88-84 win, the singer made a locker room visit to surprise the Liberty roster. However, as the entire Liberty crew had their fan moment, Jones, who was busy with her post-game lifting routine, was caught off-guard.

"I was actually like getting my post-game lift in and like I hear them singing, they like - New York (imitates singing), "Jonquel Jones said on the Best of Both Worlds podcast.
"I slammed them weights down, I said ‘I know Alicia Keys not in this locker room and nobody came and got me.’ Crazy bro, I ran so fast through that dagon training room to get back to out locker room, I was juking the dagon doctors and all that."

Jonquel Jones further explained that since coaches take some time to get back and address the squad after games, she likes to squeeze in some repetitions in the meantime.

When the coaches come in, one of her teammates usually directs her to the locker room. Flau’jae Johnson added that her teammates might have been starstruck by Keys' appearance, nearly costing her a memory of a lifetime. While Jones could not be part of the chorus, she made just in time for the group photo.

Alicia Keys also delivered a speech for Jonquel Jones and her squad

After Jonquel Jones’ adventure to join the karaoke session with the Liberty cast, Alicia Keys also gave a heartfelt speech to congratulate the roster and thank them for their continued effort on the court.

“Thank you, ladies, you’re doing amazing,” Keys said in the Liberty’s locker room. “Just sending you my love. Thank you for that great energy out there. We feeling, we love you, just celebrating you.”

Keys also spearheaded a playoff hype video for their championship run this season.
