“I still can't believe it was real”: UConn’s Paige Bueckers at loss for words recalling her meeting with Grey’s Anatomy stars
UConn Huskies’ star player Paige Bueckers enjoyed an eventful summer in September. The guard appeared at the US Open on Sept. 2, cheering on American tennis favorite Frances Tiafoe in his last 16 matchup against Alexei Popyrin in New York City. She also got the chance to meet stars of popular TV show Grey's Anatomy.
Bueckers sat down for an interview on "Got Next with Meghan & Zora" on Tuesday. She was asked about her top memories from the US Open and she recalled her meeting with the cast of Grey's Anatomy.
"I still can’t believe it was real," Bueckers said. “I used to watch Grey's Anatomy all throughout my high school, like freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year. I met Meredith Grey. ... I screamed. I saw her on the billboard like who's here and screamed and I'm like, wow. Shonda Rhimes, the gang. It's crazy.” (04:30)
Paige Bueckers on Wade Trophy watch list
Paige Bueckers has come a long way since joining the UConn Huskies, overcoming injuries during her sophomore and junior years. Last season, in her redshirt junior year, she returned and led the team to a Final Four appearance. Instead of entering the WNBA draft, she stayed at UConn and used an extra year of eligibility.
She dominated nearly every national Player of the Year award during her freshman season for UConn in 2020-21. The only exception was the Wade Trophy, which freshmen aren't eligible for.
Now, in her fifth and final season, Bueckers is on the watch list for the 2025 Wade Trophy, an award given annually to the top player. The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced Tuesday that she is one of 15 players nominated, with the recipient to be named at the Final Four in Tampa in April.
