“It kinda made me laugh”: Ex-Kentucky star Reed Sheppard recalls 42-inch NBA Draft combine vertical
Reed Sheppard never imagined recording the highest vertical leap (42 inches) at the 2024 NBA combine. The former Kentucky Wildcats star shared his amusement at the jump, which tied for the best among all prospects, with Paul George in a recent episode of "Podcast with P."
When asked about his surprising measurement, Sheppard said:
"I know I could jump but I didn't know I was going to have the highest vertical in the NBA draft," Sheppard said. "I got to give a lot of credit to my guy Ryan. He kinda helped this out with a little arm trick, so I was able to get a couple more inches.
"It was all fun. I looked up at the board when I saw 42, it kinda made me laugh because I wasn't expecting that and I know no one else was expecting it. So it was a funny time."
As George asked Sheppard to showcase his vertical in a dunk contest, Sheppard denied the possibility despite topping the coming talent pool. This is probably because the most impactful element of Sheppard's game comes from beyond the arc.
Reed Sheppard became the nation's top shooter in his only collegiate season with Kentucky, sinking 52% of his long rangers while shooting collectively for 53% from the field. While there is room for improvement in creating separation off the bounce, Sheppard effectively shares the ball with open teammates on the floor.
Moreover, his presence is equally impactful on the defensive end. His lateral quickness and active hands can disrupt ball handlers and alter passing lanes.
Reed Sheppard is several NBA teams' favorite prospect
Reed Sheppard is in a constant battle with Zaccharie Risacher, Donovan Clingan and Alex Sarr for the #1 spot in the draft. The Atlanta Hawks, who hold the first pick, already have a guard in Trae Young and will probably look to bolster other areas of their roster; decreasing the chances of Sheppard being a top pick.
Nevertheless, draft analyst Jonathan Givony believes Sheppard is many teams' top prospect. The distinction comes from Reed Sheppard's overall game, making him an immediate fit for many rosters. Givony also predicts Sheppard to be a top 5 pick, with the San Antonio Spurs being the favorites to draft him and pair with Victor Wembanyama.
