“Jose’s first college points”: UConn’s Azzi Fudd swells with pride while watching her brother Jose Fudd’s UMW debut
UConn Huskies' Azzi Fudd marked a special moment on Saturday when her brother, Jose Fudd, scored his first college points with the University of Mary Washington Eagles against Kean. The guard shared a clip from the game on her Instagram story and wrote:
“Jose’s first college points. Proud big sister moment”
Jose Fudd played for 10 minutes and finished with six points with one rebound. Before college, Fudd played for the George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Virginia. In an interview with the school's newspaper, "Rank & File," Azzi Fudd spoke about watching her brother grow over the years.
“I guess emotional can be the word I’m trying to say, seeing him and how much better he’s gotten,” Fudd said. “He’s always picked things up really easily, which was annoying.
“Just to see how far he’s come since he was little, and jumping in my practices (when) he was younger, not even playing on a team yet to now being one of the best on his high school team, committing and going to play at the next level. So (I got) to see him make his dreams come true.”
Azzi Fudd comments on her special relationship with Jose Fudd
Azzi Fudd met Jose when he was two years old and came under the foster care of her paternal grandmother, Georgia Fudd. Although he and his brother, Jon, stayed with Georgia, things changed when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer when Jose was five.
Jon and Jose were adopted by Azzi Fudd's parents, Tim and Katie. Growing up as a single child meant that the UConn guard gladly welcomed this big change. In an interview with The Washington Post in February 2023, Azzi spoke about her bond with her brothers.
“I’m so grateful to be able to call him my little brother,” she said. “It’s a relationship that you can’t fake. I don’t know what I would do without him. It’s hard being away from (Jose and Jon), but whenever I go home, it’s nice to see him, to be annoyed by him and get his hugs.”
After trying his skills at baseball and soccer, Jose Fudd got into basketball when he was four, and this was because of his sister. He was Azzi Fudd's practice partner, always there to help her out.
“I guess I helped him, but he helped me so much in my process as well,” Azzi said. “By being my rebounder and passer literally every day and they would cry, complain about it and obviously didn’t have a choice.
"They are my little brothers, my mom would tell them what to do, but still they were there every day helping me.”
While Jose makes his way with the Eagles, Azzi is preparing for her comeback from injury with the UConn Huskies this season.
