“JuJu Watkins is better than your darling Caitlin Clark”: Fans react after journalist’s take on USC star
In an X post on Saturday, Sports Illustrated journalist Robin Lundberg compared the USC Trojans’ JuJu Watkins, LSU Tigers guard Flau’jae Johnson and Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo. Lundberg does not believe the USC star is that much better than the other two women's college basketball stars.
This tweet came amid the high-profile matchup between Watkins' Trojans and Hidalgo's Fighting Irish on Saturday.
JuJu Watkins is averaging 22.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 3.1 steals and 41.5 FG% this season. Flau'jae Johnson is averaging 24.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 57.5 FG%, while Hannah Hidalgo putting up 24.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 5.2 steals and 48.9 FG% for Notre Dame.
That take drew some heated reactions from fans:
"You don’t know basketball. Juju is better than your darling Clark already. Juju will be the next Maya Moore," one fan posted:
In another post, the same fan responded to Lundberg:
"Paige Bueckers is also a better player than Clark and much likable,"
Another fan pushed back on Lundberg's take on Watkins:
"she is is better than both of them come on robin have you see this girl?"
A few other fans reacted to Lundberg's take:
“Why are you already crying while typing this? Seems weird,” One fan wrote.
“I was just telling one of my boys that CC mob is gonna come for JuJu as soon as the season starts. The train is never late,” another fan said.
“Juju's shot selection remains a serious impediment to being placed among the all-time greats in college hoops,” said another.
Hannah Hidalgo wins battle with JuJu Watkins
Hannah Hidalgo's Notre Dame Fighting Irish are now 5-0 start to their season after they handled their business against JuJu Watkins' USC Trojans 74-61 on Saturday.
Hidalgo led all scorers and finished with 24 points, 8 assists, 5 steals and 6 rebounds. Meanwhile, JuJu Watkins' 24 points, 5 assists, 6 rebounds and 2 steals were not enough to prevent the loss.
"I think we did a good job. I’m so proud of everyone. We won that game because we were locked in," Hidalgo said during her post-game interview.
With both teams expected to be national championship contenders, the Irish secured a statement win.
