"Kamala Harris would approve": Dawn Staley excitedly shows off her voting pride to fans on X
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley has been consistent in encouraging her followers to exercise their voting rights for the 2024 presidential elections. On Monday, Staley shared with her fans on X that she had already cast her vote.
Posting a photo of her "I Voted" stamp, the coach wrote:
"This just happened and I’m sure @KamalaHarris would approve of this vote. 🥰🥰🥰"
During the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this August, Dawn Staley was present for the final night when they announced Kamala Harris as the party's official candidate for the election.
Staley already has an existing relationship with Vice President Harris, who visited the South Carolina women's team earlier this year.
"I am inspired by the passion, drive, and competitive edge of the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team," Harris wrote on X. "Thank you for welcoming me to campus today."
Dawn Staley also spoke about the importance of someone like Kamala Harris at the helm.
“Meeting Vice President Harris for the first time was royalty for me,” Staley said in a statement, via ABC News 4. “I got emotional introducing her to the Gamecock women's basketball team because she is the dream filler for those who are climbing to do the unimaginable and to sit where it's unpopular, but right.
“Thank you, Madam VP for inspiring us on this MLK Day."
In September, Dawn Staley was one of the 10 sports personalities announced as co-chairs of “Athletes for Harris.” It included retired players like Magic Johnson, Billie Jean King and Candace Parker, among others.
Dawn Staley is preparing for the return of college basketball
After leading the Gamecocks on an undefeated run to the NCAA championship last season, Dawn Staley is all ready to repeat it in the upcoming season as well. South Carolina is predicted as the favorite to win the title and is ranked No. 1 on AP's preseason poll.
Despite the slight changes to the team, Dawn Staley is prepared for the task.
"I'm incredibly proud of our team," she said (via CBS Sports). "They're locked in, they are competitive. I think it's going well.
"We've taken a lot of losses to the Highlighters the first couple of weeks of practice, but I think now they've stepped it up and they've accepted the challenge. Sometimes they let them know about it. It's cool, we are really a tight-knit family."
South Carolina will begin its season on Nov. 4 against Michigan.
