Kim Mulkey cherishes LSU’s Hall of Fame wall with Seimone Augustus’ new addition
Within months of joining Kim Mulkey's squad as an assistant coach, Seimone Augustus has a new banner in her name on the Hall of Fame wall. It was not her first significant induction of the year, as she was named to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the East Baton Rouge Parish Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame earlier this year.
The LSU women's basketball Instagram handle uploaded an image of Augustus’ new achievement. Mulkey reshared the post on her Instagram story to spread the news and offer her congratulations on Monday.
Seimone Augustus joined the LSU coaching staff in May. She brings coaching experience from the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks (2021-2022). She then took a brief break from coaching before returning as the Athletes Unlimited Basketball’s 2023 season facilitator.
As a player for LSU, Augustus, a Baton Rouge native, led the Tigers to their first three Final Four appearances (2004-2006), raising the level of women's basketball at the school. She won the National Freshman of the Year, the Naismith Award, the John R. Wooden Award, AP National Player of the Year and more.
Seimone Augustus averaged 19.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game in her college career, as one of the most crucial recruits in LSU history. Her No. 33 jersey was retired in 2010, and she was honored with a statue on the campus last year.
Why did Seimone Augustus return to the LSU Tigers?
Seimone Augustus returns to LSU as one of the program's best. Moreover, she brings 14 years of WNBA experience with her, which is what the players in the program are eyeing. She also has significant international experience and three Olympic gold medals.
While Augustus is ready to pour her wisdom into the younger generation, she is also looking forward to upscaling her coaching acumen.
“Life always guides you to where you belong. Thus, my path has led me home,” Augustus said in May. “Gracing me with an opportunity to further my coaching career within a program that I hold dearly. They say experience is the greatest teacher. I am truly excited about the knowledge and wisdom I will gain working alongside of legendary Coach Mulkey and reconnecting with my former coach, Coach Bob Starkey.
“A Fighting Tiger once more, I look forward to pouring into this generation of Lady Tigers. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger. A new chapter begins. See you at the PMAC (Pete Maravich Assembly Center).”
The majority of Augustus’ WNBA career was with the Minnesota Lynx (2006 to 2019). She lifted the WNBA championship trophy four times. She also earned eight All-Star inductions and was the Finals MVP in 2011.
