“Maybe when I’m not a rookie anymore”: Iowa’s Jada Gyamfi gives hilarious ideas to Kate Martin to scare A’ja Wilson with spooky costumes

Kate Martin and her former Iowa Hawkeyes teammate Jada Gyamfi discussed a hilarious instance that still gets them laughing. On Halloween, Martin and Caitlin Clark made a random trip to Walmart to stock up on wigs, costumes and props with a mission to scare Gyamfi.

Clark and another of their Hawkeyes teammates, Kylie Feuerbach, hid inside Jada Gyamfi's closet, jumping out and catching her completely off-guard. Additionally, they cleverly lured Gyamfi to the kitchen, where Martin had been waiting in her disguise.

As the two discussed the chaotic yet memorable day on the "Fresh Tawk" podcast, Jada Gyamfi presented an idea for Martin to scare off A'ja Wilson, the WNBA 2024 MVP frontrunner and her teammate on the Las Vegas Aces. While the idea sat well with Martin, she wanted to wait out her rookie season.

"I need to see that series. I would cry if you scared A'ja Wilson," Gyamfi said.
"I couldn't, I couldn't," Martin said. "Maybe like when I'm not a rookie anymore. My sophomore year," she added.

During their conversation, Kate Martin said that scare pranks are the funniest antics to pull. A signifying fact about the same is that she had a realistic animal costume in her wardrobe during her Iowa days, one that she has owned since her high school years.

Kate Martin has earned A'ja Wilson's respect

Ever since the Las Vegas Aces picked her 18th in the WNBA draft, the rookie has made a great impression on her big-league teammates. One such moment came when Martin suffered an Achilles bruise against Chicago Sky, the Aces’ last game before the mid-season break.

The entire Aces’ crew and staff quickly surrounded Kate Martin, helping her up and even covering the cameras with hand towels. In the postgame conference, the team's star, A’ja Wilson, displayed a staunch stance of protecting Martin, highlighting the camaraderie between the rookie and the vet.

Kate Martin’s WNBA journey began with a surprise. She was not invited to the draft night by the league and was in the vicinity simply as a spectator to support Caitlin Clark.

Nevertheless, Martin, who initially thought her professional basketball journey was over, has successfully translated her leadership from Hawkeyes to the WNBA.
