Michigan State’s Tom Izzo doesn't shy away from praising Kansas star KJ Adams; compares him to 5x NBA champ
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo sang the praises of Kansas forward KJ Adams ahead of the teams' meeting on Tuesday. The Jayhawks will face the Spartans in the Champions Classic at State Farm Arena, Atlanta.
The last time these teams played was also at the Champions Classic in 2021 in New York, where Kansas emerged victorious. Michigan State and Kansas have made perfect starts to this campaign, with both schools winning their first two games.
Tom Izzo, who has led the Spartans to eight Final Fours and a national championship glory, spoke with the media for a pregame conference on Monday where he highlighted some Kansas players' impressive abilities, including junior KJ Adams.
Izzo made a big comparison, saying that KJ Adams Jr. plays a versatile role for the Jayhawks, similar to five-time NBA champion and Michigan State alum Magic Johnson.
"Izzo points to No. 1 Kansas' veteran experience, calls KJ Adams "kind of a Magic Johnson" for all the things he does for the Jayhawks," Chris Solari, a Michigan State reporter tweeted.
Although Adams may not yet have the same level of impact the Lakers legend had, the Spartans coach believes he brings a unique skill set that makes him "the key" player for Kansas.
In their win against No. 10 North Carolina on Saturday, Adams contributed 14 points alongside two rebounds and two assists.
Tom Izzo hails former Michigan star Hunter Dickinson
Aside from Adams, Izzo also hailed another Kansas star in Hunter Dickinson. Dickinson joined the Jayhawks from the Michigan Wolverines last year. He averaged 17.9 points and 10.9 rebounds last season for the Jayhawks.
This season, which is also his last in college, Dickinson is thriving on the court and making a considerable impact with his skill, experience and leadership.
Ahead of the Champions Classic clash against Kansas, Tom Izzo praised the 7-foot-2 big man and his development.
"I think he's been pretty consistent," the Michigan State coach said. "He hasn't changed much, he's the same old guy. But he's got more experience now."
Dickinson was a key contributor to the Jayhawks' perfect start this season.
