Dawn Staley praised MiLaysia Fulwiley's defense against Texas

MiLaysia Fulwiley finished with eight points, four rebounds and three steals while making 40.0% of her shots against Texas. It was her lowest-scoring game of 2025. Nevertheless, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley commended the sophomore for her contributions on the other end of the floor.

"When Lay’s locked in, she impacts it on both sides of the basketball," Staley said postgame via On3.com.
"I think, I would like for her to really understand her power from a defensive standpoint. So, we’re always encouraging her...I think she’s finally understanding her power on both sides of the basketball and I hope she’s consistently getting the stat," she added.

Fulwiley's defensive acumen is pivotal for South Carolina's continued success, especially after the Gamecocks lost Ashlyn Watkins due to a season-ending ACL while playing Mississippi State on Jan. 5.

The Gamecocks are currently in the toughest five-game bracket of their season. They will now face the No. 19 Alabama Crimson Tide next on Thursday before heading back home to host the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners and No. 5 LSU Tigers. They then travel to face the No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers, making for five ranked contests in 16 days.
