"Punching down is not a flex”: College hoops fans left unimpressed as Kim Mulkey’s LSU pull of 2nd quarter shutout vs NC Central

Kim Mulkey's LSU defeated the NC Central Eagles with a 131-44 win on Sunday. It was the coach's 100th win with the program and the school’s second-highest scoring total ever. Mulkey achieved the feat in her 114th game, 15 games before Sue Gunter, making her the fastest coach to hit triple-digit wins in Baton Rouge.

The height of LSU’s dominance came in the second quarter. Flau’jae Johnson opened the stretch with nine consecutive points, helping the Tigers hold the Eagles to zero points for the quarter.

The espnw Instagram account posted about the Tigers' second-quarter shutout. It highlighted that this was the second time the Tigers shut out a team over an entire quarter in the last year. They mounted a 30-0 run against McNeese Cowgirls last season in December.

Kim Mulkey's thoughts on making LSU Tigers history

Kim Mulkey credited her 100 wins with LSU to the players she had recruited and coached in the last four years. She also highlights that long-term success also demands players to buy into a coach’s system and culture.

"See these wrinkles, see this gray hair?" Mulkey joked. "No, it's just coaching good players. Throughout my career, I've been blessed to coach players that believe in our system and believe in what we do."
"And coming to LSU is not any different than when I was at Baylor for 20-plus years, kids have to believe in you, they have to let you coach them and all those wins belong to them." (5:40)

Kim Mulkey is currently the only coach in the entire NCAA basketball landscape (men's and women's) to lead multiple programs to a national title. During her 20-plus years with Baylor, she garnered three NCAA trophies ('05, '12 and '19). She is also the fastest coach to clinch 700 wins, which she achieved in November 2023.
