REPORT: Clemson’s Mackenzie Kramer out for the season due to medical reasons; may retire from college basketball
Mackenzie Kramer will miss the 2024-25 season for medical reasons, dealing a big blow to the Clemson Tigers, according to On3 on Monday. While the details of the medical reasons are unknown, sources hinted to On3 that they could potentially force her to retire from college basketball altogether.
The fact that the fifth-year senior guard is no longer on the Tigers' roster on their website further hints at her retirement from college basketball, given she would be playing her final season of eligibility had she been healthy this season.
Kramer was one of the best guards to represent Saint Michael Albertville High, finishing her high school basketball as the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,749 career points. She also earned a first-team all-state and all-region selection and was a top five finalist for Miss Minnesota Basketball.
Kramer played for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks for her first three seasons, beginning in 2020-21. She made an instant impact in her freshman season, making the Patriot League All-Rookie team by averaging 8.7 points and 2.9 rebounds.
In her sophomore season, Mackenzie Kramer set a single-season program record for 3-pointers (95) and led the Mountain Hawks in scoring with an average of 15.9 while starting all 30 games she appeared in. She also led the Patriot League in 3-pointers per game (3.2), earning a place on the All-Patriot League second team.
In her final season at Lehigh, Kramer made the Patriot League first team, finishing as the league's second-highest scorer with 499 points. She hit the transfer portal following her junior season, with the Clemson Tigers seizing the opportunity to strengthen their backcourt.
Mackenzie Kramer made a solid impression at Clemson
In her senior season at Clemson, Mackenzie Kramer was one of the Tigers' top guards, showing off her impressive shooting accuracy from beyond the arc. She led the team in 3-pointers made (44), attempted (121) and percentage (36.4), earning a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team.
In 23 appearances, Kramer averaged 8.3 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.9 assists, shooting 40.3% from the field and 92.3% from the free-throw line.
The Tigers tipped off the 2024-25 season with a comfortable 78-44 victory over the Jackson State Tigers on Monday. They will try to keep the momentum going in their next game against the North Carolina Central Eagles on Thursday.
