UNC’s Elliot Cadeau provides update on RJ Davis injury

UNC guard and reigning ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis took a hard fall on Saturday afternoon during the Tar Heels' Blue-White Scrimmage at Smith Center.

It was a first look at North Carolina's lineup heading into the new season and things took a somber turn when Davis hit the ground.

He stayed down for several minutes before limping off the court. During an interview with Tar Heel Illustrated, sophomore guard Elliot Cadeau talked about what he felt when he saw his teammate on the floor.

"Definitely scared for him, scared for the team and very concerned," Elliot said on Sunday. "But we found out it was good, it was nothing crazy. He's good."

Following the scrimmage, the Tar Heels announced that Davis suffered a lower back contusion.

RJ Davis returns for his fifth year at UNC

After a 2023-24 season that saw him lead the ACC with 21.2 points per game and a consensus All-American nod, RJ Davis decided that he would return to Chapel Hill for his final year.

Explaining his decision to "Inside Carolina" in July, Davis highlighted that timing was an important factor in his decision.

"My mind changed like every day of what I was gonna do," Davis said. "So I didn't have an exact month or exact date of when I was going to announce when I was coming back.
"I think that's why I waited so long because I wasn't sure and I wanted to make sure I was making the best decision, so I took as much time as was needed. And I feel like that was good on my behalf because I gotta make sure that I'm good and I'm okay with whatever decision I'm making."

RJ Davis is fifth on UNC's all-time scoring list with 2,088 points and just needs 57 more to pass Sam Perkins. He is also just 202 and 260 points away from overtaking Phil Ford and Armando Bacot. Tyler Hansbrough is the program's leading scorer with 2,872 points.

The Tar Heels will travel to Memphis on Tuesday to play an exhibition game before returning to Chapel Hill to face Johnson C. Smith on Oct. 27. Their season opener will be on Nov. 4 against Elon.
