“See these wrinkles, see this grey hair”: Kim Mulkey shows her witty side after winning her 100th game with LSU
Kim Mulkey became the quickest coach in the LSU Tigers basketball program history (men's or women's) to garner 100 wins after the win over North Carolina Central Eagles on Sunday (131-44). The feat comes in her fourth season with the program and after the conclusion of her 114th game. The previous record was held by Sue Gunter, who reached 100 wins in 129 games.
When Mulkey was asked about her thoughts on making LSU history, the coach joked that her achievement took a heavy toll on her appearance, which now looks markedly older. Nevertheless, she quickly pivoted to give credit to the talented players she has had the opportunity to coach at Baton Rouge.
"See these wrinkles, see this gray hair?" Mulkey said. "No, it's just coaching good players. Throughout my career, I've been blessed to coach players that believe in our system and believe in what we do."
"And coming to LSU is not any different than when I was at Baylor for 20-plus years, kids have to believe in you, they have to let you coach them and all those wins belong to them." (5:42)
The impact of Kim Mulkey's culture was immediately visible at LSU. In her first season with the program (2021), she led the Tigers to the second round of the NCAA tourney.
Next year, behind her masterful recruitment and coaching, Mulkey led LSU to its first-ever women's basketball NCAA title, defeating the Caitlin Clark-led Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2023 Finals.
Kim Mulkey is the only coach to win NCAA titles with multiple programs
Before joining the Tigers, Kim Mulkey was at Baylor from 2000 to 2021. She led the program to over 600 wins and three NCAA titles (2005, 2012 and 2019).
With her successful 2023 national title run with the Tigers, Mulkey became the only coach in men's or women’s college basketball to lift the NCAA trophy with multiple programs.
She also became the fastest coach in men’s and women’s basketball to reach the 700th win last season, when the Tigers defeated Virginia Tech in November.
So far, Kim Mulkey has clinched a 20-win season each year throughout her head coaching career. Her Tigers are currently 9-0 in the 2024-25 season and heading towards another successful year under the 62-year-old coach.
