Shaqir O'Neal's close relationship with Shaquille O'Neal
Shaqir O'Neal has shown his close relationship with his father, Shaquille O'Neal, through his banter-filled posts on Instagram, often poking fun at the charismatic big man.
Shaq reciprocated the banter during an episode of "The Big Podcast with Shaq" when former NBA star Jamal Crawford asked which of his children he believed would make him a grandfather first.
“I’m going to have to go with Shaqir," Shaq said. "Cuz they say he’s my light-skinned twin. Myles is a player, Shareef is a player, but yeah, Shaqir is probably going to be the first. And I always tell him like, ‘Hey man, when sh*t goes down, don’t call your mama first. You better call me first, I can tell you that.'
“I tell them, ‘Don’t bring them babies around till they are 2. I’m gonna be the guy that’s gonna give them everything they want. Toys, ride around. Trying not to think about that a lot. I know it’s happening one day. I know I’m gonna be the coolest, youngest, flyest grandpa in the world.”
Shaqir O'Neal's career ambitions
Shaqir O'Neal was the No. 275 ranked player nationally in the class of 2021 from Union Grove High School, Georgia, and wanted to play for Duke. However, an offer never arrived, prompting him to join Texas Southern.
In an interview with 247Sports when he joined Texas Southern, the outgoing O'Neal revealed his type of gameplay and what he hoped to achieve in the future.
"You can expect a lot of buckets," O'Neal said. "I'm trying to get to the league. I just love the game. I’m a really good shooter and I like to play defense. I want to get better at my handle and my defense. I’m really skinny, so I need to get in the gym and get stronger.”
Shaqir O'Neal registered 1.8 points on 33.3% shooting from the floor and 28.6% from beyond the arc, along with 1.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists in 9.6 minutes per game averaged last season for Texas Southern.
