"She didn't talk to me for two or three days": UConn HC Dan Hurley recalls sons complaining to wife after he shouted at her favorite player
Dan Hurley, like many coaches, is known for his tough love and no-nonsense coaching style. These types of motivational tactics are not loved by everyone but are required to ensure that the players are mentally strong enough to confront any situation they may face in their professional careers.
However, this once landed Hurley in hot water with his wife, Andrea Hurley. Recalling the incident during an interview with News 8's Dennis House for "This Week in Connecticut", coach Hurley said (Timestamp: 3:37):
"There's only been one (incident), and I blame my sons for it. Danny and Andrew were at a practice back at Rhode Island, where I was particularly tough on her favorite player. And they came home and told mommy, to her, to the boss, the head coach of the home team, and she didn't talk to me for two or three days.
"That, to me, I would rather argue than like the passive-aggressive stuff that she delivered for, like, three days. It was brutal."
Andrea acknowledged avoiding the practice facility because she does not agree with this kind of coaching. However, since it has helped her husband to be one of college basketball's best coaches, there's not much she can say against it.
Insider points out the crucial role Dan Hurley's wife, Andrea plays in his career decisions
Over the past week, UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley turned down the LA Lakers' $70 million offer for their vacant coaching position. Amid the many reasons pointed out, college basketball insider John Fanta of Fox Sports said that Hurley's wife also played a role in his decision to stay in Storrs.
"Andrea Hurley is the queen of the Hurley family, and she has all the say in the world," Fanta said on "The Herd Show" with Colin Cowherd. "She saved Dan Hurley in college. Dan has talked about this. He's been very outspoken about how he's achieved happiness now at UConn.
"He's dealt with some mental health problems in his playing days at Seton Hall. And Andrea is someone that he met (there), and his life's been changed ever since. She is his rock, and his family absolutely played a part in this."
In April, Hurley was linked with the Kentucky Wildcats, who were looking for a coach after John Calipari resigned. However, he dismissed the rumors, saying he could not afford a divorce as she loved Connecticut.
Andrea accompanied her husband on his trip to LA for the interview and has been vocal in interviews about her love for UConn and her desire to stay in the state.
