After two seasons with South Carolina, where she played a restricted role, Chloe Kitts is set to have her moment this season as the Gamecocks attempt to defend their 2024 NCAA championship.

Chloe Kitts leads South Carolina to a tough win in the season opener

Top-ranked South Carolina played its first game of the 2024-25 season on Monday against Michigan in Las Vegas as part of the Hall of Fame series. Chloe Kitts led the team to the 68-62 win with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Tessa Johnson scored the second-highest with 15 points.

The Gamecocks have been without the services of a proper center since Kamilla Cardoso left for the WNBA. Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley named Chloe Kitts as one of her potential replacements and placed great hope on the forward.

“I think (Sania) Feagin has the experience," Staley said. "Chloe has gotten better. Like, Chloe can go get you a bucket in any type of way … midrange, then you put her on the block, and she’s pretty savvy with her footwork. Chloe has been outstanding, (and) Feagin has improved as well.”

Staley also named freshman Joyce Edwards as the other possible replacement for Cardoso. The forward finished Monday night with 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

“I think Joyce can rebound," Staley said. "She actually is an aggressive rebounder. I do think she has a little bit of go-get-you-a-bucket, too. … I mean, she is probably well ahead of where I thought she could be."

Despite the loss of a reliant player like Kamilla Cardoso, South Carolina is still ranked No. 1 and is favored to win another championship in 2025. This is due to the roster, which has remained unchanged except for the former center.

Players like Raven Johnson, MiLaysia Fulwiley, Joyce Edwards and Te-Hina Paopao are expected to play crucial roles in South Carolina's attempt to win its third championship in four years.

Up next, the Gamecocks will take on No. 9 NC State on Sunday.
