South Carolina’s MiLaysia Fulwiley gets high praise from Steph Curry: “There’s a flair for the dramatic”

Golden State Warriors star and four-time NBA champion Steph Curry hailed South Carolina star MiLaysia Fulwiley for her athleticism, style and creativity.

In an interview with The Greenville News reporter Lulu Kesin, Curry described the sophomore guard as flashy and similar to his playing style.

"Very similar to how I play, there’s a flair for the dramatic, a creativity that she always finds a way to express," Curry told Kesin. "She has a killer instinct."

Fulwiley, the first collegiate athlete to sign with Curry Brand, said that she's motivated by Curry's confidence and dynamic play.

"Confidence is key, he has the most confidence when he steps on the floor so that motivated me to be more confident myself," Fulwiley said.

The two-time MVP likes Fulwiley's humility and desire to get better each day. He believes that she would be a successful professional player in the future.

"She knows she’s good but there’s humility too," Curry said. "She knows she has a lot more to do and can get a lot better. I like that combination. There’s things you can’t teach with her, her ball handling, speed, athleticism, the way she sees the game, she's fearless."

MiLaysia Fulwiley continues to be a key piece in South Carolina's 2024-25 women's college basketball campaign

MiLaysia Fulwiley has been a vital piece in South Carolina's campaign in the 2024-25 women's college basketball season. Called off from the bench by Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley, Fulwiley has produced big numbers in limited minutes for the defending champions.

The W. J. Keenan product has averaged 10.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game this season. It's a slight dip from her 2023-24 season tally of 11.7 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.2 apg and 1.7 spg.

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley wants Fulwiley to complement her flashiness with fundamentals and effectively bring them out in games. The guard is a work in progress and is welcoming it with open arms.

"To to be able to play in a program as good as this, coached under one of the best coaches in the world and be home at the same time, it just means a lot," Fulwiley said.

The Gamecocks close the nonconference season against Wofford on Dec. 29 at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina. They start their SEC campaign with a visit to Missouri at the Mizzou Arena on January 2.
