Team USA’s Sunisa Lee “fangirls” over South Carolina HC Dawn Staley’s special message for her
Dawn Staley has been Team USA's biggest cheerleader at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. She has made an appearance in the grandstands of multiple sports to support the athletes, and the latest on the list is Sunisa Lee.
The gymnast participated in the all-around finals on Thursday, and Staley gave her a shout-out, asking the officials to medel her already. Sunisa replied to the post:
"OMGGGG i’m fangirling rn !!!😭😭😭❤️"
Sunisa Lee won the bronze, and Dawn Staley then returned the appreciation to Sunisa Lee as she commented:
"That’s me with you! Super proud of you! Love that medal smile!! Keep me great, SUNI!!!"
This was Sunisa's second medal at the Paris Games after winning gold in the team event. She was not the only gymnast that coach Staley posted about as she highlighted gold medal winner Simone Biles.
"BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA GOAT SIGHTING!!! @Simone_Biles #ParisOlympics2024."
Dawn Staley asks for patience as Team USA WBB struggles against Belgium
The women's basketball team, led by A'ja Wilson and Diana Taurasi, took on Belgium in Game 2 of the group phase. The USA struggled during the game as the Belgians hit the big shots and disrupted the flow.
Fans on X were critical of the coaching staff led by Cheryl Reeve, as they failed to nail the right combination on the court. Dawn Staley came to their defense as she tweeted:
"Yall just so yall know it’s not easy coaching this talent filled team….virtually impossible to play 12 players. It’s all about combinations. Managing combinations within the game is extremely difficult. Let’s be patient with the process. And trust our coaches!"
In the end, the USA won 87-74 and Breanna Stewart led with 26 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. A'ja Wilson finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and three steals.
Dawn Staley's comment came from the experience of coaching a star-studded team to gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This was her first as a coach as she won three other gold medals as a player in the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympic games.
Reeve had more positives to take from the game, as she said in a presser:
“For us, to be in hard games is valuable — versus maybe some pool play (games) we’ve had in the past that don’t ready you for what lies ahead in medal rounds,” Reeve said (via USA Today). “This was terrific for us. No doubt we’re gonna be in this situation again and hopefully we can handle it just as well.”
Team USA will next take on Germany on Sunday in its final group phase game.
