Gonzaga gave the game away in the second half against Kentucky
Bulldogs' 50-34 lead at halftime indicated that the Bulldogs are en route to their third 100-point outing this season. They dominated the paint on both ends in the first stretch with their size and physicality. As a result, Kentucky failed to find its groove and shot 13-26 from the field.
However, Mark Pope’s halftime adjustments enabled the Wildcats to force overtime and win the contest by one point (90-89). Pope targeted Gonzaga’s pick-and-roll actions by switching to the zone. This disrupted the Bulldogs’ momentum at the start of the second half, enabling an 18-6 run in the first 6 minutes.
Already without starter Lamont Butler, the Wildcats suffered another setback as sharpshooter Kerr Kriisa was sent to the locker room due to an injury. The roster also dealt with foul trouble at the time, slowing down their offense.
Kentucky leveled the scoring with just a minute left on the clock and forced overtime. UK opened OT with seven straight points before the Bulldogs narrowed the lead to one with back-to-back 3-pointers. In the end, the Wildcats survived the clock, coming back from a 16-point deficit.
