"That girl had me so tight": LSU's Flau'jae Johnson hilariously recalls tough matchup with McNeese's "girl with the mullet"
Flau'jae Johnson was with LSU teammate Mikaylah Williams on the latest episode of Best of Both Worlds podcast. One of the conversations led to Johnson revisiting a game against McNeese Womens, reflecting on a matchup that still lives in her mind.
"Sometimes I be thinking about the game we played against the girl with the mullet," Johnson said. "Was that the same game? Oh McNeese? Oooo, I don't remember what happened, but that girl had me so tight. But she had a mullet. She pushed me or something. Imma crash out, certified, I ain't gon lie," she added.
Moreover, Flau'jae Johnson claimed that her matchup got into her skin early in the game, forcing her to request Kim Mulkey to bench her.
"I'm working on myself. But that game right there boy, I was on 10, I said 'coach take me out the game before I do something I'm gon regret. She was trying it," Johnson followed.
The player Johnson is referring to is Mireia Yespes, a 6-foot-2 Spanish guard who will suit up for her senior year next season.
Last season, Yespes was McNeese's second best (11.6 points per game) and the most effective scorer (49.8% shooting).
However, in the game against LSU, Mireia Yespes was Cowgirls' second-last player to come off the bench. She was handed the assignment to be a defense-first player, with her scoring limited to just two attempts in 24 minutes.
On the other hand, Flau'jae Johnson poured in 16 points, five steals, five assists and four rebounds while shooting 55.5%.
Flau'jae Johnson and LSU made program history against McNeese
Despite Flau’jae Johnson’s sentiment of rivalry towards Mireia Yespes, the McNeese Cowgirls never stood a chance against LSU.
The program mounted a huge 133-44 win (89 point difference), marking it as the biggest win margin in the program's history. The previous record came in 1955, when LSU beat Prairie View A&M, 104-28.
Including Johnson, six LSU players scored in double-digits as Angel Reese (21/11), Aneesah Morrow (18/20) and freshman Aalyah Del Rosario (27/10) notched a double-double.
LSU opened the game with a 20 point lead at the first buzzer and kept McNeese scoreless in the second quarter, springing a 62-12 statline at the half.
