"That team owed y'all money?": Fans go crazy as 5'10 guard ties program record to lead Cougars to victory in Charleston battle
Taryn Barbot popped off in the Charleston Cougars' 86-45 victory over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Dec. 3. The sophomore was untouchable in scoring as she tied the program's record for most 3-pointers in a game with 10 while missing only two attempts to finish on an uber-efficient 83.3% shooting clip.
This resulted in the 5-foot-10 guard ending the game with 35 points, six rebounds, four steals, two blocks and an assist in 33 minutes of play. She also only had one two-point make to complete an 11-of-17 field goal percentage for the matchup.
Fans then quickly took notice of Barbot being on fire during the matchup as they poured in their reactions on social media.
"Tartar, that team owed y'all money? What ah way y'all handled bizness! Let's go Auntie Babies," a fan wrote in the comment section of the scorecard post.
Taryn with all the 3s! Great game!," one fan said.
"Dang sista taryn had 45," another fan commented.
Some fans have since expressed that Barbot's exhilarating game could be the fuel for the Cougars to reap in more wins.
"Taryn Barbot was in her IEXCEL S*** today 35 PTS, 6 RBS. 4 STL, 2 BLK. Let keep it going as we go into conference play. The winning should continue at College of Charleston each game," one fan claimed on X.
"We run Charleston," another fan proclaimed.
"That was much better!," another user said.
Games like these can put Barbot on the map, as she continues on her 2024-2025 campaign to collect accolades such as a CAA Preseason Player of the Year nod.
It was a one-of-a-kind night for the second-year guard
Barbot's first 3-pointer of the fixture came at the 6:17 mark of the first quarter by way of her twin sister Taylor. After one quarter of play, the rest of the Cougars would steadily pace their lead with a six-point edge, 16-10.
Her next three twenty-footers would come in the first few minutes of the second period, with the last of them giving Charleston a 31-13 lead. The second-year standout then sinked in a couple of free throws to aid her team in finishing the first half ahead by a staggering 20 points, 39-19.
Going into the second half, Barbot would convert her only two-pointer of the game with a layup in the 8:47 mark, 41-22. She wouldn't score again for the next seven minutes before uncorking two 3-pointers from her twin's passes to bring the Cougars' advantage to 34 points at 64-30, heading into the layover period.
In the final frame, Barbot would open it by knocking down back-to-back three-pointers. She then made a couple more 3-pointers, both assisted by Lauren Philpotts, to cap off her career-high game with a Cougars victory, 86-45.
The now 6-1 Cougars' next game will be against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
