"The way I got nowhere": USC's JuJu Watkins unsatisfied as she trains hard for the upcoming college basketball season
JuJu Watkins is back in the gym preparing for her sophomore year with the USC Trojans. After helping the team to a historic Elite Eight run last season, there are heavy expectations on the guard to lead the Trojans to a championship next year.
With practice now officially started, Watkins and her team are training hard on the court and off it. On Friday, the guard shared an Instagram story video of her trying a high bar pull-up.
"The way I got nowhere. Rate my routine," she wrote.
Last season, JuJu Watkins' biggest weak point was her left-hand skills, and the guard worked on it over the offseason while recovering from surgery on her right hand.
“I was really eager to just work on my left (hand),” Watkins said (via Southern California News Group). “So throughout the whole process, I was just telling myself, like, ‘You need to work on your left anyways. So might as well take advantage of the situation.’”
“The biggest thing is, it won’t matter where the defense tries to send her,” her trainer Phil Handy said. "'You try to send me left, send me right, doesn’t matter. I’ll be able to execute and dominate with both hands.'”
JuJu Watkins and the USC Trojans will be playing in the Big Ten from the 2024-25 season, and fans are curious to see the new rivalries that the team will form.
JuJu Watkins shares plans for her own AAU team
It is quite common for NBA players to have their own teams in the AAU and Nike EYBL. There is Team Durant, Team Melo and Team CP3, and JuJu Watkins is looking to add hers to the circuit.
During her appearance on Flau'jae Johnson's "Best of Both Worlds" podcast, Watkins said:
"That's definitely coming up. I want to have a camp. And eventually have my own like little team (AAU team), that would be fire. So yeah, I definitely want to do that.
"I think for me, it's like, we working on somewhere we're going to practice, like the team is going to practice in my hometown, Watts. So, just to show what they are capable of doing, and it doesn't matter where you are from. I really want to be there for my city and the young girls coming up."
While this is a long-term goal for Watkins, her current quest will be to lead the Trojans to an NCAA championship next year.
