Cavinder twins lead Miami Hurricanes to gritty road win over Pittsburgh
The Miami Hurricanes are heading to the Maui Classic with an impressive 9-1 record following a 62-56 road victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday. In their ACC opener, Haley Cavinder and Jasmyne Roberts stood out for the Hurricanes. Cavinder achieved a double-double, leading the team with 22 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and one steal.
Roberts contributed 19 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. She also set a career-high with five steals while adding three rebounds.
Haley's twin sister, Hanna Cavinder, played a key role as well, scoring eight points, grabbing five rebounds and delivering a game-high six assists. Combined, the Cavinder twins accounted for 30 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists on the night.
Defensively, Miami held Pittsburgh to 56 points while limiting them to 34.5% shooting from the field and 27.3% from beyond the arc. Offensively, the Hurricanes shot 40.7% from the field, 34.8% from 3-point range and 75% from the free-throw line. They also recorded 16 assists on 24 made field goals.
The Hurricanes established control early, closing the first quarter with a 15-6 lead while holding Pitt to just 2-of-15 shooting.
Miami and the Cavinder twins will conclude their non-conference schedule at the Maui Classic, facing Nevada on Thursday and Oregon State on Friday. The team will then return home to host the No. 14 North Carolina Tar Heels on Dec. 29.
