UConn's Dan Hurley doesn't fuss if rival coaches "like him" after reuniting with Rick Pitino at 2024 Big East Media Days
After leading the UConn Huskies to back-to-back NCAA championship victories, Dan Hurley is least bothered about his relationship with fellow coaches. At the Big East Media Day, he reunited with fellow coach Rick Pitino.
During his interview at the Big East Media Day, Hurley revealed that he sees his fellow coaches as just competitors, adding in specifics about his relationship with St. John's coach Pitino.
"Listen, we're all competitors," Hurley said. "Obviously, we all want to beat each others' brains in. I don't think a whole lot about my relationships with the people I compete against.
"Maybe I'm ignorant that way, but I really don't think about whether these guys that I'm hired to beat like me. But, I have a lot of respect for Coach Pitino. I have a lot of respect for our roster of coaches."
Dan Hurley and his team are preparing for a potential third title win in a row. They will be the first to do this since John Wooden and UCLA during their successful journey from 1967 to 1973.
"It's the elephant in the room," Hurley said. "You can't hide from this opportunity. If we don't win three in a row, what are people going to say? That you suck as a coach because you could only win two in a row? But we realize the magnitude of this. You have to be a champion at UConn to be remembered and celebrated."
Dan Hurley is itching for the third national championship: Alex Karaban
Coach Hurley revealed that he has a "pathological, sick and obsessive" need to win the NCAA title once again. This desire has not gone unnoticed by his team.
"Hurley wants another championship so badly, but he's coaching us the same as he always has. The intensity has always been there. Now, it's just leveling up," Alex Karaban said.
Dan Hurley does not have most of his starting pieces from last year, as they all moved to the NBA. With Karaban as the only returning starter, Hurley has added pieces from the transfer portal and freshman recruits that should help him achieve his goal.
