UConn's Dan Hurley reveals dad Bob "stole" basketball advice from another coach

Dan Hurley, one of the best modern-day college basketball coaches, has opened up about a piece of basketball advice his dad Bob acquired.

Hurley, who was eyed by the LA Lakers this offseason, had his UConn Huskies make a White House visit last week following their 2024 NCAA championship, He shared a few words of wisdom that were passed on to him by his father, Bob.

While there are a lot of teachings he can quote his father on, Hurley shed light on the select few that Bob Hurley learned from the Wizard of Westwood, John Wooden.

“My dad had a bunch of (advice) that still kind of ring true in my mind,” Hurley said. “You know, one I think he stole from Coach Wooden (is) be quick, but don’t hurry. Two hands on everything. Be fundamentally very sound,” he added.

Dan Hurley emphasized the importance team basketball and its values play in young athletes' lives, teaching them the knacks and ways to follow throughout their careers and beyond.

Hurley aims to follow a similar course. The UConn coach is known for his culture-igniting habits and cultivating a winning mindset in players. It was a big reason behind UConn’s second consecutive visit to the Oval Office.

Dan Hurley is aiming for a John Wooden touch in his coaching

Dan Hurley became the first coach to mount back-to-back title runs this year since Florida in 2006-07. More impressive was that he didn't run it back with stars in his rosters from the 2022-23 season. Now, as four of his 2023-24 stars transition to the NBA, Hurley has set his sights even higher.

Hurley and the Huskies aim at a three-peat, which has never been done since the early 1970s. when the UCLA Bruins, coached by the legendary Mark Wooden, won seven straight NCAA titles from 1967 to 1973.

Nevertheless, a UConn three-peat will be enough to crown Hurley as the best modern-day college basketball coach. The program will move up to third in the list of all-time leaders in NCAA titles. UConn shares the third position with the North Carolina Tar Heels, with six rafters in the arena.
