UWGB HC Doug Gottlieb reacts to bodycam video of Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill's detainment
Green Bay basketball coach Doug Gottlieb reacted to the viral bodycam footage of NFL's star wide receiver Tyreek Hill being detained. The Miami Dolphins star was initially stopped due to reckless driving and overspeeding. However, the situation escalated quickly as one of the officers pulled Hill out of his car before pinning him to the ground and handcuffing him with the help of another officer.
The incident occurred near the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday morning between 10:18 and 10:22 am.
Doug Gottlieb did not provide his exact thoughts, but said the footage showed exactly what was expected.
"Just about what we all thought," Gottlieb wrote on his X.
Tyreek Hill received a ticket for a moving violation and was released before the Dolphins’ game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After scoring a touchdown, Hill pulled out a “handcuffs” celebration.
When asked about his detainment, Hill shared that the incident was “heartbreaking” and “mind-boggling.” He said that had he not been an NFL star, the situation could have ended badly for him. He added that the situation "went from 0 to 60" in no time.
"If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been, like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up,” he shared with NBC News.
Miami-Dade Police Department has launched an investigation into Tyreek Hill’s detainment
Miami-Dade PD released the body cam footage of Hill’s detainment and said it plans to hold its officers accountable. Following an internal affairs investigation, one of the four officers visible in the footage has been transferred to administrative work.
A police union representative claimed Hill was at fault for initially being uncooperative. However, the PD has declined to publicly comment on the incident until the investigation is complete.
Defensive lineman Calais Campbell, traveling with tight end Jonnu Smith in a separate car, was also handcuffed as he stopped to help Hill. While Campbell was released soon, Tyreek Hill claimed that seeing his teammates helped him maintain his composure.
