The 25th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights were able to dominate at home as they secured a 75-52 home win in their opening game against the Wagner Seahawks. The Scarlet Knights were led by freshman star Dylan Harper, who scored 20 points in the victory to seal the deal.
Wagner (0-1) was overwhelmed by the talent but fought hard in the second half to keep this game as close as it was. Rutgers (1-0) was able to seize control with a massive run in the first half and just maintain momentum for the final 20 minutes. Wagner vs Rutgers Game Summary
The Wagner Seahawks started the game strong. They were able to keep the game close and were tied at 10-10 after the first eight and a half minutes.
However, Rutgers went on a huge 20-0 run to blow the game open. In that stretch, the Seahawks did not score a point for over 10 minutes. As a result, the Scarlet Knights entered halftime up 36-19.
Rutgers was in control from that point on. Their lead did not fall below 15 points (38-23) the rest of the way as they cruised to a comfortable victory in their season opener.
Keyontae Lewis, who finished with 12 points, was the only person to score double-digits for Wagner. The bench was productive though with 23 points.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights controlled the game with four players, including two off the bench, scoring double-digits. The team shot 50.9% from the floor but needs to do better than 12-of-21 at the charity stripe.
This was a great showing for Dylan Harper and what he can do. The Scarlet Knights should be excited about the potential of this program as they are a threat for a deep run in March.
