“Wasn’t that a hell of a sight”: Kim Mulkey gives update on her rolled ankle during LSU’s win vs Vanderbilt
Kim Mulkey said that she rolled her ankle during the fifth-ranked LSU Tigers' 83-77 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores on Monday. While a video of the instance is unavailable, the coach joked that her ice packs make her feel like a football player while appearing on 104.5 ESPN's "Off The Bench" on Tuesday.
"Well you feel good with the win," Mulkey said on the Baton Rouge radio station. "Rolled my ankle going on the court. Now, wasn't that a hell of a sight? So, I'm sitting up here like you two football players (hosts and former LSU football stars Jacob Hester and T-Bob Hebert) with ice packs everywhere."
Kim Mulkey's crew is coming off nearly losing its first game of the season. Vanderbilt matched LSU pound-for-pound in the first half, with the game tied at 21-21 after the first quarter and 37-37 at halftime.
The Tigers (19-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) dominated the glass with 21 offensive rebounds and shot the ball 14 more times. However, they led by one point entering the fourth quarter.
Aneesah Morrow and Co. found a way to hold off Vanderbilt (14-4, 1-3) in the ending minutes of the contest. However, Kim Mulkey said that it was one of the most puzzling encounters of the season.
"It's a mystery to me how that game was so close and so many different things that we did good and bad. I can't, it was just a weird game to try to explain," Mulkey said (Timestamp 5:50).
Kim Mulkey and LSU will face their toughest contest next week
The Tigers will take a two-day break from team practice before preparing for Sunday's road game at Florida (11-7, 2-2). There onwards, Kim Mulkey's crew will visit the defending champions, the No. 2 South Carolina Gamecocks (16-1, 4-0) on Jan. 23.
The game at South Carolina should be LSU's toughest yet, especially because the program has only played two ranked games so far.
Dawn Staley's crew will enter the game with similar pressure, as it will be the fourth in a run of five games against ranked teams. The Gamecocks will also look to protect their 67-game home winning streak and 51-game SEC regular season win run.
The last time both teams met was in the 2024 SEC Tournament championship game, which saw six players getting ejected before South Carolina won 79-72.
