WATCH: Dawn Staley hilariously teaches old melody to South Carolina players during practice session
Thanks to Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks put up a show even on nongame days. As South Carolina players went through their warmups on Wednesday, Staley began an impromptu music session. The coach recorded herself singing to SWV's song "Weak" while poking fun at how her players don't know the tune.
Overtime WBB posted the video on its Instagram handle as the whole team indulged in the playful atmosphere. Staley also joked that since her players don't know the song, they are in for a tough warmup.
"They really don't know (the song), they getting a good warmup," she said.
SWV's "Weak" was released in 1992 and was one of the biggest hits for more than two years. It is one of the vocal trio's most popular songs.
Dawn Staley also posted an uncut version of the practice session on her Instagram, showcasing that some players were able to keep up with the song. The video also features Gamecocks assistant coach Lisa Boyer in the huddle alongside a brief cameo by a dog.
Staley is a longtime fan of R&B music and constantly uses it to hype up her players. Her passion was captured in a video from the Gameocks' 2012-13 season, when she introduced a team driver to South Carolina's theme song of the year. It is an original track written by Asia Dozier, Shelbretta Ball and Tina Roy.
Dawn Staley's South Carolina is in the toughest stretch of its season
Last month, Dawn Staley claimed that No. 2 South Carolina's schedule is designed in such a way that it aligns players to focus only only their academics and the court.
"There shouldn't be anything competing for their time but books," she said (Timestamp: 1:10). "So, it's pretty easy when it's that clear-cut. There's books and basketball, 'cause our schedule lends itself to only to be able to concentrate on that."
However, the Gamecocks are currently in the strongest leg of their season. Including the 67-50 win over No. 5 Texas on Saturday, they will face a total of five ranked teams in 17 days.
South Carolina (16-1, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) is currently prepping for Thursday's road game at No. 19 Alabama (16-2, 3-1). The team will then return home to host No. 13 Oklahoma (14-3, 2-2) and the No. 5 LSU Tigers (19-0, 4-0) in a 2024 SEC championship rematch. The Gamecocks then travel to No. 15 Tennessee (14-2, 2-2).
