"We're not friends": LSU star Flau'jae Johnson gets 100% real about her relationship with former teammate Angel Reese
Flau'jae Johnson has opened up about her relationship with former LSU teammate Angel Reese. The pair once helped the Tigers secure the 2023 NCAA national championship, but things have seemingly drifted apart.
Johnson was a guest on “The Breakfast Club" on Monday, and the topic of her and Reese came up. She gave an update on where things stand between them, and while their friendship has seemingly faded, she made it clear that their success together remains untouchable.
“We're not friends, but that bond we had — that thing we did together, winning a national championship — you can never take that away from us,” Johnson said. “Sometimes stuff happens, you wish it didn’t, but it does. And you just gotta grow.”
Their fallout has been the subject of speculation for a while, with fans noticing the growing distance between them. Reese herself previously confirmed that the friendship had cooled during an episode of her "Unapologetically Angel" podcast in September, but without going into details.
"I still support Flau'jae. We aren't as close as we used to be," Reese said. "And there's no hard feelings or anything, but we aren't as close as we used to be. That's why people always expect us to still be posting each other and stuff like that. But, like, we aren't as close”.
However, Johnson has shed more light on what led to the disconnect behind the scenes.
“Yeah, it was a lot of media, it was a lot of locker room stuff, you know what I’m saying?” she explained. “Stuff that go on behind the scenes. But it happens. It happens.”
Despite the personal distance, Johnson confirmed that she holds no ill will and continues to recognise the history they made together. She also noted that she defends the Chicago Sky forward at every opportunity she gets.
Flau'jae Johnson shares admiration for Caitlin Clark
Flau'jae Johnson has opened up about her relationship with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark, revealing a genuine bond between the two despite their battles on the college basketball stage.
Speaking to Complex News in an interview that surfaced on X this week, Johnson praised Clark for her mentality and presence in the game.
“That’s why I’m going to some Fever games this year — to scope the scenario out,” Johnson said. “But nope, that’s my dog. I text her, ask her for advice all the time.
“She’s one of the greatest shooters in the world. Shout out, Double C,” she said. “She really got that kill mentality. But I don’t think she turn it off.
“I see the hype, I get it, I love it,” Johnson said.
The guards went head-to-head multiple times during their NCAA careers, including the high-profile 2023 national championship game, which saw Johnson’s LSU lift the trophy. The rivalry continued the following year when Clark and Iowa got their revenge in the 2024 Elite Eight.
