What happened to André Curbelo? Southern Miss guard indefinitely suspended for disciplinary reasons, per reports
Southern Miss point guard André Curbelo has been indefinitely suspended for disciplinary reasons, per reports.
The Golden Eagles senior has averaged 9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists this season. In his second season with the Golden Eagles, Curbelo was absent from Southern Miss's clash against UAB on Nov. 7 and missed out on their last game against Abilene Christian on Nov. 25.
A two-time Newsday All-Long Island Player of the Year, Curbelo grew up in Puerto Rico and started playing basketball at four. After moving to New York at 13, Curbelo joined Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School. As a junior, he averaged 15.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists and 4.0 steals that season, leading the school to the Class AA title in 2019.
During the 2020-21 season, freshman Curbelo enrolled in the Illinois basketball team. He scored his first career double-double (10 points and 12 rebounds) against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. That season, the freshman averaged 9.1 points, 4.2 assists, and four rebounds, which led to him being named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and Sixth Man of the Year. In 2022, Andre Curbelo committed to St. John’s.
Fast forward the timeline, the 6-foot guard transferred from St. John's to Southern Miss in the 2023-24 season after an almost non-existent performance. He missed the opening ten games because of issues with an NCAA eligibility waiver, which prevented him from playing. Curbelo then had limited minutes as a result of head trauma.
Out of his 12 games last season, Andre Curbelo's best performance came against Georgia State on Jan. 4. The point guard put up a triple-double (13 points, ten rebounds, 11 assists) in the 79-73 Sun Belt victory and became the first Golden Eagles’s player to do so since Ronald Jackson in 1980.
The report has left fans guessing about the possible reasons behind the decision and the issue behind Curbelo.
How this development affects the Golden Eagles is unknown, as no return date exists.
Denijay Harris scores career high in Southern Miss victory
Neftali Alvarez's last-gap layup helped Southern Miss break the hearts of Milwaukee fans with a narrow 66-65 win. Denijay Harris carried the Golden Eagles with a career-high 24 points and eight rebounds.
The Panthers led most of the game before the Golden Eagles scored a layup with 3.6 seconds to go. The Panthers will be hurting after letting the lead slip from their grasp.
Southern Miss's upcoming schedule will see the Golden Eagles take on Alabama State (Thursday), Tulane (Dec. 10) and Ole Miss (Dec. 14) in their next three games.
