Who is Aaliyah Chavez's father? Get to know more about the No. 1 women's basketball recruit's family
Aaliyah Chavez is the best girls high school basketball player. The top recruit in the 2025 class proved herself at the Mamba Invitational, an annual league named after her favorite player, Kobe Bryant. Chavez led her squad against the nation’s top players, winning the title game and lifting the MVP award.
Chavez has also created a buzz by narrowing down her college choices to six programs. She is considering Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, UCLA, South Carolina and LSU.
As Chavez embarks on a visiting spree throughout the nation, let’s learn about her parents and the impact they’ve had on her.
Who are Aaliyah Chavez's parents?
Chavez was born on Nov. 20, 2006, to Sonny Chavez and Andrea Chavez.
Sonny played high school basketball and impressed his coaches, who thought he had a knack for developing players. Years later, he runs a basketball academy named "THE LAB CERTIFIED LLC," where he organizes group clinics, private training and walk-in workouts and also has monthly subscription packages for aspiring hoopers.
Aaliyah Chavez has a younger sister, Bel’A Buckets, who is a regular at her games. She also has a brother figure in Kingston Brumley-Chavez, who is a multisport athlete (football and basketball) and has already made an official visit to the Texas Longhorns.
Andrea regularly posts pictures of the three youngsters on her Instagram.
“In just 5 months you went from being 'one day' to changing our lives upside down for the best ever! I never knew what it would be like to have a son but you will forever and always be my boy❤️ love you King!” Andrea wrote in a June 2024 post.
Kingston Brumley-Chavez is also spotted consistently in the gym with Sonny Chavez, who also coached Aaliyah Chavez to national success.
Aaliyah Chavez fought for her basketball dreams
Aaliyah Chavez had an inclination to play basketball and asked Sonny Chavez for $125 for lessons. However, he never wanted her to pursue basketball.
Nevertheless, when he couldn’t reject Aaliyah Chavez’s persistent request anymore, he deployed a plan. He signed the youngster up for an intensive workout class.
"I really wanted her to quit asking me (for lessons),” he told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. "So, I kind of put her through a little workout, wall-sits and defensive slides, sprints. We didn’t even have a basketball at the time."
The plan was to fade out her craze for basketball. However, despite some workouts forced Aaliyah to tear up, she endured it all.
The rest is history. Alliyah is working on her craft, and Sonny has found a calling in being her trainer.
