Why is Chloe Kitts not playing vs. NC State? Know more about South Carolina star’s absence
Chloe Kitts was a major omission from the South Carolina Gamecocks' roster ahead of their game against the NC State Wolfpack Sunday. The reason behind her absence from the game is rather strange, as the Gamecocks cited an "academic policy issue" in an update they posted on X prior to the game.
Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley addressed Kitts' absence from the game, showing her support for the junior forward.
"We're disappointed that Chloe has to sit out the game today due to an academic policy issue," said Staley in a statement. "Chloe has shown tremendous growth both academically and athletically over the offseason, demonstrating her commitment to excellence in every aspect. While she's unable to play today, we're incredibly proud of her progress."
Kitts shined in Gamecocks' season opener
Kitts' absence in South Carolina's game against No. 9 NC State, which is a rematch from last season's Final Four, could impact the team massively. She starred in the season opener, leading South Carolina to a narrow 68-62 victory over the Michigan Wolverines at Las Vegas on Nov. 4.
Kitts finished with a double-double, logging 19 points and 14 rebounds. She also recorded a block and a steal. She shot 7-14 from the field and made all five of her free-throw attempts. Sophomore Tessa Johnson and Joyce Edwards, the No. 2 prospect in the Class of 2024, backed up Kitts by scoring 15 and 11 points respectively.
Kitts was a key figure in the Gamecocks' run to the national championship last season, as Staley's side became only the fifth program in NCAA history to go undefeated and win the title. In 37 appearances, Kitts averaged 9.1 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 54.4% from the field.
Kitts' absence in Sunday's game opens the door for Edwards to have a bigger role. Staley also included forward Ashlyn Watkins in her roster, making this her first appearance for the Gamecocks since charges of alleged assault, battery and kidnapping against her were dropped last week.
The Gamecocks hope to maintain their perfect record by getting the better of the Wolfpack once again.
