“Why is UConn #2?”, “LSU is extremely overrated”: College hoops fans express discontent after latest updated women’s top 25 AP poll
UConn and LSU are emerging as the favorites to taste success in the 2024-25 season. Both teams have made the college basketball world take notice, and are among the few teams who are still unbeaten in the ongoing season after five weeks of action on the court.
Their progress has been reflected in the latest update of the AP Top 25 women's college basketball poll, with the Huskies ranking second and the Tigers, who were seventh at the start of the season, now ranking fourth.
This caused a stir on social media, with fans expressing their opinions on the current rankings in the weekly poll. Some fans took to making their disappointment clear, believing the Huskies and the Tigers are ranked a lot higher than they expect.
One fan wondered, "Why is UConn #2? Who have they played?"
Another fan said, "LSU is extremely overrated… UConn is number 1 seed fersure."
"LSU have played a cupcake teams," added another.
Other fans believed they deserved their spots in the poll, praising their perfect starts to the 2024-25 season.
"Loving the top 5," said one fan.

UConn have made an impeccable start to the 40th season of coach Geno Auriemma. They have won all eight of their opening games and have scored wins over three ranked opponents, No. 14 North Carolina, former No. 18 Ole Miss, who are now No. 22, and in their most recent game, former No. 22 Louisville, who fell out of the Top 25 in the latest update.
Meanwhile, the Tigers have won their opening 11 games, and have only faced one ranked opponent in the former No. 20 (now No.22) NC State, in which they scored a convincing 82-65 victory.
UConn and LSU feature in Top 5 as UCLA make history
The rise of the Huskies and the Tigers have strengthened their credentials as early favorites, as both teams feature in the top five of the poll. Meanwhile, the reigning champions, the South Carolina Gamecocks, currently rank third after starting the season as the top-ranked team.
Two weeks ago, the UCLA Bruins scored a convincing 77-62 victory over the Gamecocks, which propelled them to top spot in the poll for the first time in program history, a position they hold till today. The USC Trojans, which features sophomore superstar JuJu Watkins, currently round up the top five of the poll.
