Wilson launches Iowa-themed basketball as a tribute to former Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark
The first line of Caitlin Clark’s signature basketball collection with Wilson has been revealed. The sporting goods company unveiled the first look of three basketball variants on Wednesday, part of the season-long venture Wilson has planned to celebrate Clark’s unique journey.
"Play in the WNBA" is adorned on one of the balls, highlighting her entry as the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft. The other two balls resonate with Clark’s deep-rooted ambitions.
"Get a basketball scholarship" is embroidered on the ball to highlight her collegiate leap. Her No. 22 jersey number is braided in classic Iowa Hawkeyes colors alongside geometric patterns on the third ball.
Caitlin Clark became a Hawkeye legend as she broke several school and NCAA records (including men's basketball) during her collegiate career. One of which was surpassing legendary Pete Maravich’s all-time NCAA record of 3,667 points. Clark ended her collegiate journey with 3,951 points, attracting one-of-a-kind attention to women's basketball.
The three signature basketballs are part of the "Limitless Series" and will be up for grabs starting July 9. The overall color choices for the balls are inspired by all the teams Clark donned a jersey for during her high school and college days. The phrases engraved are straight from Clark's list of goals she wrote down in second grade.
Caitlin Clark's Wilson venture pits her beside Michael Jordan
Caitlin Clark signed with Wilson Sporting Goods right after transitioning to the big league, just like Jordan did back in 1984. Now, with the launch of her signature basketballs, she becomes the only player besides "MJ" to have their own collection with Wilson. Moreover, the fresh venture also makes her the first female athlete to have her custom set of basketballs.
Interstingly, Caitlin Clark is subjected to having enough control over her branding with Wilson and will constantly be included in the creative process of the products in the lineup. The Indiana Fever star can advise, test and provide feedback on a range of basketball products the company plans to launch.
Apart from the signature collection, Wilson also plans on aiding the Clark Foundation’s non-profit initiative to help youngsters through sports, education and nutrition.
