"We used to be in a lot of controversy": Carmelo Anthony's son Kiyan once looked back on his dad's training style
As the son of NBA great Carmelo Anthony, Kiyan always had the opportunity to learn from the legend himself. Last month, an old video of Carmelo teaching his famous jab step to a young Kiyan went viral on the internet. It is one of the many viral practice videos that the two shared on their social media.
However, approaches to training can differ, and Carmelo Anthony was once on the hot seat for his training method with Kiyan Anthony. The shooting guard recalled the incident in his 2023 Overtime documentary, "Evolution."
"My dad is a trainer. We used to, you know, be in a lot of controversy because I was like 12 years old (and) he trying to put me in a post at the time," Kiyan said. "I felt like that wasn't my game. I was more of a catch-and-shoot type of person.
"I feel like, over the years, I put in so much work. I really re-evaluated my game until, like, put it on the floor now."
With the notable improvements to his performances and showing out at the Nike EYBL circuit over the summer, the incoming senior has earned the No. 1 spot in New York on ESPN's 2025 class recruitment rankings. Kiyan Anthony is now set to choose his final college destination from his top six choices.
Kiyan Anthony once shared that the NBA was never his dream
Kiyan Anthony grew up watching Carmelo Anthony play in the NBA for his entire childhood. However, despite the early exposure, he once revealed that following in his father's footsteps came to him much later, during his teen years.
In a 2023 interview with the New York Post, Kiyan Anthony said:
“The NBA wasn’t in the picture [a year ago] because I didn’t know how good I was and I didn’t know how good I was going to be. Once I started going to work out and play with my AAU team, I realized, ‘Oh, this is actually fun.'
“When I got to high school, I didn’t think I was really good, but this past year I took a big leap, and now I feel like I can compete with the best in the country.”
The 6-foot-5 shooting guard will play his final season at Long Island Lutheran High School this winter. But before that, he will announce his college decisions in October/November.
