Which school did MiLaysia Fulwiley attend? Learn more about South Carolina star's path to college hoops success
South Carolina guard MiLaysia Fulwiley attended WJ Keenan High School in Columbia, South Carolina. It was there that she found early basketball success after being called up to the school's varsity team during her seventh grade.
Her talent would help Keenan earn four state titles, including three straight ones from 2020 to 2022. Individually, the 5-foot-10 guard was a big-time high school talent who was ranked No. 13 freshman in the Class of 2023 per ESPNW ahead of UConn's Ashlynn Shade, teammate Chloe Kitts, and Arizona's Jada Williams.
Fulwiley was a five-time SCBCA First-Team All-State from 2019 to 2023 and named the State Midlands-area Player of the Year in 2023 after averaging 25.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 5.7 steals during her senior year.
Fulwiley's efforts earned her the SCBCA Player of the Year four times (2020-2023) and third-team All-American honors from the WBCA, McDonald's, USA Today, and Naismith.
She scored over 3,000 points at Keenan to become the school's all-time leading scorer. Fulwiley showed her talent in the McDonald's All-America Game, scoring 17 points, including 11 in two minutes.
Following her high school stint, the guard picked the Gamecocks over various schools, including Florida, Louisville, and Ole Miss. She debuted in the NCAA on November 6, 2023, and tallied 17 points, six assists, and six steals to help South Carolina beat Notre Dame, 100-71.
Her impressive showing was the springboard for her breakout 2023-24 season with the Dawn Staley-coached Gamecocks. She was a key player in South Carolina's 38-0 sweep, leading the team to the national title.
Fulwiley was named the SEC Tournament MVP and was a member of the SEC All-Freshman and SEC All-Tournament Teams last season.
MiLaysia Fulwiley thrives off the bench for South Carolina
MiLaysia Fulwiley often thrived off the bench for South Carolina, with coach Dawn Staley using her as a "spark" in the offense due to her scoring abilities. Last season, she averaged 11.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals in 18.4 minutes.
She continues to be a utility player, seeing action for 17.5 minutes and averaging 10.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists this season.
Her season-high 23 points in 25 minutes against Coppin State on Nov. 14 was a career-defining performance. She made 9 of 13 attempts, including 4 of 7 from the 3-point line.
In South Carolina's last game against Purdue, Fulwiley led the team with 14 points, five rebounds, and two assists in only 17 minutes of action.
Fulwiley tends to be magic or erratic in some games but South Carolina coach Dawn Staley sticks to her Swiss army knife due to her proven explosiveness and all-around ability on the court.
