Who is Anthony Roy? Know more about Green Bay senior leading the points per game in 2024-25 NCAA season so far

Anthony Roy and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay have struggled into the 2024-25 college basketball season. The Phoenix are last in the Horizon League, with a 2-8 record and 0-2 in conference play.

However, there's a lone bright spot for the Doug Gottlieb-coached squad - Anthony Roy. The 6-foot-5 Oakland native has taken over the team since transfering from NAIA school Langston University in Oklahoma.

Roy's collegiate career has been a wild ride, starting with Division I school San Francisco, where he averaged 4.0 points in the 2020-21 season. After playing eight games with the Dons, he took his talents to the junior college circuit and played for Wenatchee Valley in Washington, where he posted 23.2 ppg.

Roy went back to Division I and played for New Mexico State in the 2022-23 season, averaging 10.3 ppg. He suited up for the Aggies in 16 games before going back to juco to play for Langston, where he averaged 18.4 points and was chosen as a First Team NAIA All-American in the 2023-24 season.

The guard chose to play for UWGB this season, and his decision to play under Doug Gottlieb served him well. He was given a green light to shoot, with the nation watching him strut his stuff.

Anthony Roy appeared in nine of Green Bay's 10 games, averaging 28.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals. He has shot 51.9% from the field, including 45.0% from way downtown, and made 83.9% of his free throws this season.

The guard's most amazing stat this season was his 3-point shots made. In nine games, he has averaged 5.0 3-point connections, including eight 3-point conversions against Ohio State and Western Illionis, where he scored his season-high 35 points.

Anthony Roy has made seven triples in Green Bay's season opener against Oklahoma State, six 3-pointers against IU Indianapolis and five against Evansville. His shooting prowess was due to the trust given to him by Gottlieb, which has helped him become the nation's top scorer in the 2024-25 season, averaging 28.0 ppm.

Anthony Roy cites his uncle for his passion for basketball

Anthony Roy credited his uncle with his passion for hoops. His uncle was a coach for a prominent AAU program that had Aaron Gordon, Jabari Bird and Trevor Dunbar as former players.

Roy said that his uncle would take him to the gym, and those players would inspire him to take up basketball and become one of the top players in California.

“My uncle was really good. Where I’m from, he was like one of those dudes who was supposed to make it out but didn’t. Everybody knew my uncle where I was from,” the UWGB star said.

Although he was a top star in the state in high school, a few college programs showed interest in him, particularly Montana State, Cal State Fullerton and University of San Francisco, where he eventually played in the 2020-21 season.

His journey in college made Roy appreciate the Division I media exposure and the competition surrounding it. The UWGB guard also made sure that he kept it real in playing basketball under several transfers from NAIA, juco and Division I.

“A lot of people in my situation wouldn’t have got better at basketball. I kind of just stuck with it, and I knew my potential and just kept playing for real,” Roy said.

The senior player hopes to play in the NBA or G-League once his college eligibility is up. His option is open to playing in foreign leagues and venture into coaching in the future.
